Artist Statement
Near or Far is an ongoing series of photographic portraits that explore the continuous negotiation of power, trust, and vulnerability within intimate relationships.
I’m captivated by the complexity and unpredictability of human connection. I create staged photographs of my friends in their private spaces, drawing from their personal stories and fragments of their relationships to construct fictionalized narratives. At the same time, I project my own doubts and the barriers I experience in relationships onto these situations.
Sometimes, I cast my Hinge dates as models, working within the space between reality and fiction to imagine new forms of connection. I occasionally place myself within the frame, becoming both observer and participant, as a way to examine my own desires, insecurities, and patterns of intimacy. As my romantic relationships are often short-lived, this process becomes a form of self-reflection and a way of turning inward.
I’m interested in the tension between what is performed for the camera and what is revealed within these interactions. The work explores how control shifts within intimate relationships, and how trust involves both letting go and holding back. It reflects a desire to be seen and a resistance to being exposed. Even in close relationships, there are moments of distance, when feelings remain unspoken and loneliness exists alongside connection.
